Equality in front of God

Man and Woman are equal in Islam but not the same. They have different functions in the world and so must observe different behaviour in the context of different circumstances. The Islamic teaching is that their roles are complimentary to one another and neither is superior to the other. There is also no superiority based on race, wealth, lineage etc. in Islam. God-consciousness is the one factor which distinguishes one person from another in rank, and the level of this in a person is truly known only to God.

Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).” (Quran 49:13)

Similarly, the prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) said in his final sermon:

“All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, neither does a non-Arab have superiority over an Arab. Also a white has no superiority over a black nor does a black have superiority over a White except by piety and good action.”
